I thought I would share some of my favorite pieces for an apartment (living room/dining room and kitchen). If this post does well I may do some more decor posts.
I have to admit most of these are reasonably affordable. I am not one to spend tons of money on most things especially in a temporary place. Now on some of the places in the apartment where I spend the most time, I may spend more (like the couch or electronics).
1 – Couch (Pottery Barn or Wayfair): A couch, I feel, is a necessity and you have to make sure that it is comfortable to you. It is a place that you and guest will spend a lot of time on in your apartment and since there wont be many seating options, you have to make sure the one that you have is good quality and comfy. Pottery Barn makes great couches for a reasonable price just make sure to wait for a sale. Wayfair is a good option too for quality and reasonable prices.
2 – Bookcase (Target): Vertical storage is amazing! Apartments aren’t known for storage so get it where you can. We have two of these bookshelves and one of the 4-shelf version and they are very useful!
3 – TV Stand (Ikea): TV stands are known to be short and long. It’s nice to have one with a lot of storage so try getting one that is taller than normal to get the space inside to store DVDs or cookbooks or whatever you need to store.
4 – Throw Pillows (Pottery Barn 1 & 2): Throw pillows can be expensive, I know, but if you get general ones that you can have out all year, then they are worth it.
5 – Throw Blanket (Eddie Bauer): Fuzzy blankets make the living room comfy. You can’t go wrong with having a cozy blanket around to just through on when you need it. We love ours and waited for a good sale to buy them (I’ve seen them go down as far as $25).
6 – Cordless Vacuum (Dyson): Cordless vacuums take up so much less space then a normal one. In an apartment, there isn’t a whole lot of space to store a normal one or the need of a giant vacuum. You don’t have to buy the newest model and sometimes you can find sales on them. They are worth the investment and can come with you to any place you live.
7 – TV Stick (Fire TV): These are great if you’re wanting to “cut the cord” with cable because you have Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime already. TV sticks are great so that if you don’t want or have a smart TV, you can pull up all your accounts onto the TV and just watch everything from there.
8 – Smart Lights (Philips Hue): Apartments don’t have that much overhead lighting. When you have many lamps around a room it gets tiring to go around and turn them all on. That’s why smart lighting is the best because you can turn everything on at once. Also with some you can change colors to have an ambiance.
9 – Electronic Assistant (Echo Dot): If you get smart lights (see #8) or have a Bluetooth speakers around your home, this is a great addition to be able to control everything hands-free. While cooking, it is useful to set multiple timers at once. It has been very helpful with getting ready in the morning with letting me know the news and weather without looking at my phone.
As with all purchases for an apartment, wait for sales. Nothing is needed extremely right away and if you wait they could be knocked down in price.
