I recently went on a cruise with my family to visiting England, Ireland, Scotland, and France (more posts on that coming later). While I was on this cruise I thought I would take the opportunity of the free alcohol drink package to make sure that I didn’t like alcoholic drinks. I have nothing against alcohol when people drink responsibly. I just have never liked the flavor it adds to drinks. Now before this cruise I hadn’t tried an alcoholic drink (besides a sip here and there) in about 7 years. The last time I tried alcohol, I found that no matter the drink, I would always taste the alcohol as an after taste and it would always leave food tasting off if I drank it while eating.
So while I was on this cruise, I decided to order different mixed drinks and wine with different types of alcohol in them. Most of the time I gave it a couple of sips before writing it off. There were a couple times that I could not make it past the first sip though. I even thought I started liking a certain wine but when I had it the next night, it tasted horrible to me.
While other people would go to the dining room and the staff would know you well enough to automatically know you would like a a glass of wine or something to go with dinner. I was known to always want a Shirley Temple. I find nothing wrong with this. I find these drinks a nice change to regular soda and think of them as a special treat when on vacation if I don’t want to try a mocktail.
When I looked at the bar menu to see which alcoholic drink to try, I was always amazed how many choices there were in the alcoholic section but very few in the mocktail section (I think my favorite mocktail that I got was a chocolate banana drink shown above). I feel like there should be more options for fun non alcoholic drinks at bars. Even when I try to look up mocktail recipes online or in books there are very few that are out there. It would be nice to be able to hang out with friends at bars and still get the experience without having to buy a standard non alcoholic drink or an alcoholic drink you know you don’t like.
What is your favorite type of drink to get on a vacation?
