It was just Memorial Day weekend and instead of going to the beach or the pool, my sister and I decided to explore our own city (Washington, DC). Now there are certain places that we always go but then we also went to places that we haven’t been to in more than 10 years.
Our first stop was the Natural History Museum. This one is one of our favorites. Almost every time we go into DC, we have to stop by it. Now they apparently revamped the Elephant in the main room so we had to go see that. You also can not go there without seeing the Hope Diamond. If you are into jewels or crystals at all, you need to go to the Gems exhibit.
Our next stop was the National Museum of American Indians. We haven’t really been to this one since either of us were in high school. There was an exhibit on the Inca Road Engineering. It was pretty interesting if you are able to go see it. Because it is a road that ranges all over the mountains, they had to create unique ways for people to travel through it.
If you aren’t that into museum exhibits (I know how you feel), I’ve found the best way is to make it fun. See if there is an activity packet where you have to go around and find answers (even if it is for kids). Find a lecture series on iTunes and listen to that while you look at all the objects on display. Try to make it interesting instead of just going around reading plaques.
Our last stop was the Botanical Gardens. We normally go there around Christmas to see the trains, but this time we wanted to see all the outside plants. I loved seeing all the flowers in bloom and all the colors. I also wanted to show you what I wore for a day out touring the city. I decided on this H&M dress. It had an open back for the most part which was great because it got up to 92 degrees.
I think everyone should explore their home city every now and then. Even if you work in the city, you don’t get to explore all that it has to offer all the time. Explore, have fun, make a day of it.
What is your favorite thing to do in your city?
There are so many great sites and exhibits out now in DC!
So much fun! I'm also a D.C. resident who hasn't seen the sights in a few years… This is definitely inspiring me to get out and see a couple of museums!
