Apartment Mood Board Series: Living Room (September 2021)

So this may seem like a weird blog post concept but I’m been excited and nervous to post about it. I think I mentioned in a past post that I am currently staying at my parents until I am able to find a job and move out on my own. It has been helpful to be here being surrounded by family since my boyfriend of 4 years and I broke up and with the world being how it is.

When I moved back in, I got rid of most of my apartment things (keeping a couple of kitchen stuff and my dining table packed away for the future). I wasn’t in love with the furniture I had before and I knew when I moved out on my own, I would want to start with the style I have always wanted. I would describe my interior design style: Coastal Modern. I love the look of metal and crisp lines but I also love the soft whites and wood tones.

I have always wanted to do interior design posts on this blog but my last apartment wasn’t the style I wanted to show and I was just waiting until I had a new place and the furniture I wanted. Then I thought, why not show the concept of how I would like my place to look and so I decided to create this Mood Board series.

First up is the Living Room section. I thought we would start out in what I consider the heart of the home. The Living Room/Family Room and Dining Room is where most of my family likes to get together. I like to keep things simple with not to much going on.

I would consider this couch and ottoman would be perfect for an apartment (this one is also in the running with this ottoman). I like the idea of getting a standard couch and then also getting an ottoman instead of getting a chaise on the couch. I think the ottoman allows for you to easily configure it to whatever your apartment ends up being and also ads a seat that can be put anywhere in the room.

I didn’t have an end table or lamps in my last place and I think that they would be beneficial to the function of the room. Nobody like to always reach toward the coffee table to put their drink down so an end table is perfect for that (this one is also in the running).

Since most apartments don’t have overhead light in most rooms (not really sure why that is), lamps are essential. I think a table lamp and floor lamp (this one and this one would also look good) are essential to the room.

I have always had rectangular coffee tables but I think that with the ottoman I would go for a circular shape. I like how this one has a shelf underneath so that you don’t clutter up the top of it. If you would like a more affordable option, this one could work too.

I would put a full length mirror in the living room (mainly because it wouldn’t fit in the bedroom). I think it could add a feature to the room and also the living would be a great background for outfit of the day photos.

Of course, you do need storage in the living room (where else are you suppose to put all you DVDs and Books?). I think the perfect way to do that is get a drawer set or book shelf and a TV stand that has storage (this one also works).

Now onto the accessories of the room.

Let’s start with what makes the room cozy. Blankets and Pillows. I have certain types of blankets that I like for different seasons. When it is warm out I like just standard fleece blanket because it’s not too thin but its still fuzzy. Then when it’s cold out I like all the fuzzy so a thicker blanket is better.

Pillows have to be thick. I like to be able to lay against it and for it not to go flat instantly. I also like them to be easily washable.

Electronics are a key part in making the Living Room. I would go for a standard TV (don’t need anything too fancy). This is where it gets controversial, are you a Apple, Amazon, or Google house. I have been an Apple and Amazon house. I think I would get an Apple TV and an Apple mini HomePod. I could also do an Amazon FireTV and Echo Show or Dot.

I think that these are the main components of a Living Room that go with the theme that I am looking at.

What is your interior design style? What is one item that you love in your Living Room?
